Latvijos Dailė
Julijs Feders (1838 - 1909)
Julis Feders was born 19 June, 1838b in Koknese, Latvia. Latvian painter and teacher. He was the first artist to concentrate on the representation of the Latvian landscape and as such is considered the founder of the Latvian school of landscape painting. Assigned (1856–62) to the studio of Sokrat Vorob’yov (1817–88) at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts, he developed an approach to landscape that moved away from academic romanticism towards plein-air realism and that was more akin to that of his fellow students Ivan Shishkin and Lev Kamenev (1833–86), founder-members of the WANDERERS, than to his teacher’s. However, on the death of his father in 1863, he lost his means of support and was forced to teach art and photography in Mitava (now Jelgava), thereafter principally maintaining contact with the Academy by sending works to its spring exhibitions. He maintained a lifelong attraction to the local countryside in Latvia, which he depicted in many paintings (e.g. Landscape with Storm-clouds , 1873; After the Storm , 1874; the Ruins of Koknese Castle , 1904; all Riga, Latv. Mus. F.A.). From 1874 he travelled extensively, visiting Norway, France, Spain and, in 1875–6, Germany, where he studied with his fellow Balt Eugen Dücker, a professor of landscape painting at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. Feders then moved to Belgorod (now in Russia), north of Kharkiv (Ukraine), where he worked for ten years as art teacher at the Pedagogical Institute. During this time he became an academician (1880) and made many studies of the Ukrainian landscape (e.g. Near Svyatogorsk Monastery , 1882; Moscow, Tret’yakov Gal.). In 1886 he was appointed to teach art at St Petersburg Commercial School, a position he held until 1898. His studio became a meeting-place for the younger generation of Latvian artists then studying in the Russian capital, among them the founders of the new progressive Latvian nationalist group THE GNOME (Rukis), whose members included Adams Alksnis (1864–97), Janis Rozentals, Vilhelms Purvitis and Janis Valters. This contact and environment proved significant not only for the young artists but also for Feders, who visited Latvia almost every summer and painted some of his most atmospheric scenes and his finest studies of light and shade during these years, for example Gauja Valley (1891; Riga, City A. Mus.), Fishermen’s Nest (1886) and Perse River (1894; both Riga, Latv. Mus. F.A.). In 1898 he retired to Belgorod.
He died 14 Feb, 1909 in Nezhin, Ukraine.
